Dr. Uma Purighalla, a board-certified Internal Medicine physician, has spent the past 25 years caring for patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings in Pittsburgh. In addition, she is a certified Ayurvedic Practitioner through the Kerala Ayurveda Academy—approved by the California State Board of Postsecondary Education—and is also an active member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association.
Complementing her medical and Ayurvedic training, she is a certified Yoga instructor through Three Rivers Yoga and has completed specialized training in Lifestyle Medicine through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
Since 2010, Dr. Purighalla has been a dedicated advocate for holistic health. She has developed, organized, and delivered numerous seminars for corporate, community, and hospital-based audiences, focusing on plant-centered nutrition, Yoga, and Ayurvedic lifestyle principles.
Driven by a lifelong passion for integrating modern medical science with the timeless wisdom of Yoga and Ayurveda, Dr. Purighalla now serves as a consultant. In this role, she collaborates with conventional medical physicians to help incorporate these complementary practices safely and effectively into patient care, fostering a truly holistic approach to health and well-being.

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic system of medicine from India that promotes health by aligning the body, mind, and spirit with the rhythms and laws of nature. It views the body as a microcosm of the universe, made up of the five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, which combine to form three vital energies or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each individual has these doshas in unique ratios.
A core principle of Ayurveda is that "one size does not fit all." Each person has a unique constitution, and true healing comes from restoring balance according to individual needs. Ayurveda doesn’t simply address symptoms. It takes time to understand the details of your symptoms, daily routines, lifestyle, emotional patterns, environment, and more to tailor its recommendations specifically for you.
Importantly, Ayurveda places great emphasis not just on what you eat, but on how well you digest and absorb food. Strong digestion, known as agni, is considered the foundation of good health. Even nutritious food can create imbalance if it's not properly digested, so Ayurveda focuses on supporting digestive strength to ensure effective nutrient absorption and toxin elimination.

My body has indeed presented me with the surprises that are typically seen as one reaches the mid 50's, like gravity seeming a little stronger, grays a bit grayer and joints needing much more TLC.
What is most fascinating about this aging process is that the wisdom of nature and the miracles of our own body, mind and heart have many treasured secretes to share.
These pearls have so often guided me to make the journey through time smoother and even joyful. May we all have that chance to invest in our every day wellness routine like a gardener that lovingly tends to the Earth!
